Summer Academy:  21st Century Astronomy Ambassador's Program
July 10, 2006 - August 4, 2006
Introduction:

The Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy (CGWA) at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) is inviting applications for its Summer Academy for High School Students to be held July 10 through August 4, 2006. The deadline for applications is May 15, 2006. The academy, first conceived by Professor Richard Price, aims at exposing high school students to research in modern astronomy.

Program:

Ten motivated high school students will be selected for the Summer Academy. They will be trained in modern GW, IR, UV, gamma ray, radio astronomy, and data analysis techniques. They will also construct a four-inch optical telecope and do observations with it. Each student will be able to keep the telescope he/she builds. These students, deemed "Ambassadors," will also be trained in making scientific presentations and will be asked to make presentations to other students and science clubs (arranged by CGWA members) throughout the following year (August 2006 - May 2007).

Scholarships:

CGWA will fully fund the program.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be sophomores or juniors in high school with a good academic track record. Students should be from local area schools (i.e., Cameron County) as CGWA cannot offer residential facilities for this program.

Schedule:

Sessions for the Summer Academy will be held Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Lunch and snacks will be provided.
