Grid Summer Workshop 2006
June 26, 2006 - June 30, 2006
Summary:   The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC), the Grid Physics Network (GriPhyN), the International Virtual Data Grid Laboratory (iVDGL), and the Grid Research Integration Deployment and Support Center (GRIDS) will sponsor a one-week intensive summer workshop in grid computing and its application in scientific data analysis. This school will be held on South Padre Island, a resort located on the Gulf of Mexico, twenty miles from downtown Brownsville, Texas. The aim of the program will be to give students a basic foundation in distributed computing as well as valuable hands-on training in computing techniques. The workshop introduces essential skills that will be needed by students in the natural and applied sciences, engineering, and computer science to conduct and support scientific analysis in the emerging grid computing environment.

GWA Summer School 2006
June 5, 2006 - June 16, 2006
Summary:

The third Summer School in Gravitational Wave Astronomy (GWA) will be held on South Padre Island (SPI) in Texas from June 5 through 16, 2006. As in the first two events, the two-week intensive program will focus on four primary areas of GWA, including the astrophysics of gravitational wave sources, modeling of gravitational wave sources, analysis of gravitational wave data, and gravitational wave detector instrumentation. The instructors for these courses are: Cole Miller (UM), Joseph Romano (Cardiff U), Miguel Alcubierre (UNAM), and Peter Saulson (Syracuse U).

Before the summer school commences, during the week of May 29 through June 2, 2006, CGWA will offer an introduction to general relativity (GR) for students who have not taken a GR course as well as those needing a refresher.

The GWA summer school generally attracts 35 to 40 students from around the world to SPI every year and is oriented to senior undergraduate and junior graduate students with the intention of providing them the necessary background to begin research programs in GWA.

Notes:

The deadline for applications is March 15, 2006. Early applications are welcomed. Applications forms and guidelines are available as follows:

  • GWA Summer School Application: [ DOC ] [ PDF ]
  • Financial Aid Guidelines: [ DOC ] [ PDF ]

Scholarships are available for qualifying students who apply before the application deadline.

Students wishing to earn credits for the GWA summer school will need to fill out the admission application form. The tuition for this course will be covered by the school.

Summer School in Gravitational Wave Astronomy
June 11, 2005 - June 25, 2005
Summary:   The second Summer School in Gravitational Wave Astronomy will be held in South Padre Island (TX), June 11-25, 2005. The program like in the first event will mostly focus on two-week intensive courses in four different areas of Gravitational Wave Astronomy including astrophysics of gravitational wave sources, modeling of gravitational wave sources, analysis of gravitational wave data, and gravitational wave detector instrumentation. The instructors for these courses are respectively: Cole Miller (U. of Maryland), Miguel Alcubierre (UNAM, Mexico), Curt Cutler (AEI, Germany) and Peter Saulson (U. of Syracuse). An opening lecture on Gravitational Wave Astronomy will be given by Joan Centrella (NASA Goddard) in the afternoon of June 11th. An excusion to LIGO is planned for the week end of June 18-19th. The school usually drives about 35 to 40 students from around the world to South Padre Island every year and is oriented to senior undergraduate and junior graduate students with the scope of providing them necessary background to begin research programs in Gravitational Wave Astronomy.
